Britax closure a crushing blow for workers

Saturday 07th May 2016

The closure of car seat maker Britax would be a crushing blow for the 80 people employed there who would struggle to find new employment, Australian Workers’ Union Victorian Secretary Ben Davis said today.

“All Victorian workers would understand what a terrible thing has happened to these good and loyal workers today,” Mr Davis said.

“Our hearts go out to them and we will be doing everything in our power to ensure they receive all their entitlements and are given the best shot possible at a future in work.”

It was disappointing the decision to close the operation was made without talking to unions or government in an attempt to find a way to continue manufacturing in Victoria.

“The company has been open about the fact that there is need for investment in new plant and equipment but does not appeared to have explored co-investment or incentives of any sort,” Mr Davis said.

“Unions are always prepared to work with employers to save jobs and maintain the viability of ongoing manufacturing employment.”

The AWU met the devastated workers yesterday and would continue to support them in the difficult time ahead.
